The main theme of Sexual Secrets is that "physical love can become the pathway to liberation." Based on 2,000 years of Oriental texts, the book presents the sexual practices of China, Japan, Nepal, Tibet, and India, which are often quite different from one another physically as well as spiritually. A guide to sex and mysticism, Sexual Secrets concentrates on the transcendental aspects of the human being as well as the technicalities of intercourse.

The book is divided into "Brahma the Creative," which discusses the "egg" of positive energy, yoga, and other traditional creative arts; "Shiva the Transcendental," a "heart talk" between a man and woman, who become exalted to god and goddess as they make love and discuss archetypical meanings, mystic forms, sexual fantasy and practices, fasting, and other things; and "Vishnu the Preserver," which contains a repertory of ways to make love, including homosexuality and group sex.

Much of the book is complex and detailed. Charts like "Fourfold Evolution of Ecstasy according to the Tantric Tradition" need study before they are useful to the uninitiated. If one wishes to follow Oriental practices for specific days during cycles of erotic passion--aligning the bed and pillows accordingly, using certain positions, making the proper sounds--one must master a wealth of details.

Positions are suggested for reasons other than the purely physical. For example, Tortoise Position--in which the woman sits on the man''s lap with her mouth, arms, and legs touching his--circulates and exchanges energy, in addition to holding "the secret of longevity."
